Getting the help of a small business service provider can be scary and confusing, I know. Especially in your first few years of business when you're still figuring out how things work!

If you have or aspire to have an online business, I'm sure working with a professional web designer has crossed your mind.

There's often a lot of confusion over what a web designer does and how you can work with them - the reality is, every web designer will do things differently, but here are some common misconceptions to get you started and set your expectations:

1. Web design is just about making things look pretty

Web design should be about making your website look appealing for your target customers, no? Prettifying goes a long way! But web designers also pair it with strategy and principles like user experience (UX), so that the front-facing part of your website works well for customers and the back-end works well for you, the business owner.

2. Anyone can design a website

These days, you're quite right! With web builders like Squarespace and WIX, it's never been easier to build a website - but that doesn't mean it's easy to build it well. It takes a concentrated effort - time learning, lots of trial and error gaining hands-on experience and keeping up to date with the latest features - to understand how best to build a website and tailor it to the needs of different industries.

3. I don't need to be involved in the web design process

Sure, but you won't be happy with the results. As the business owner, you know your business inside and out, as well as your vision for what it should look like and how it should be communicated. As the lifeblood of your business, web designers need your input throughout the process to make sure the website suits you, your needs and your customers.

4. Web designers will do exactly as I tell them

Yes and no. Remember, a web designer is a professional with years of experience designing and building websites as well as keeping on top of current trends and technology. Their job is to use that experience to build you a website that is to your specifications and effective for your needs. Think of them as a collaborator, not an assistant.

5. A web designer will write your copy for you

Nope, web designers will not write your web copy (text) for you UNLESS they are also a copywriter, and your package explicitly includes copywriting. Expect to pay a good chunk more for this - copywriting is a big job and is worth its weight in gold for small business owners who aren't great at writing for their brand.

Remember, not all web designers do things the same way or have the same skills, so use the above list to discuss ways of working and expectations with any designer you're looking to hire.
